New normal? No worries with Hotel Sogo's New Normal Playbook

With COVID-19, the way we live and the way we do things have changed. One of those affected is the hotel industry. Because of this, hotels are now adapting to a new normal—among these hotels is Hotel Sogo, one of the leading hotel chains in the Philippines.

We know that as early as December 2019, Hotel Sogo has already been implementing precautionary measures to secure the safety of its employees and guests in light of this pandemic.

Among these are: temperature checks at the entrance, alcohol and hand sanitizers in common areas, COVID-19 info dissemination, and enhanced cleaning and sanitation in all its branches.

Under its Sogo Cares Program, the hotel chain was the first to provide free accommodations that served as temporary shelter. A total of P80-million or more than 800 room accommodations were given to healthcare workers, OFWs, and seafarers repatriates for free. This is in coordination with 10 city mayors and 31 hospitals in the country.

Now that the lockdown is slowly easing out in the country, Sogo Hotel is ready to open its doors under the new normal as part of its “So Clean, So Good, So Safe” campaign under the Sogo Safe Program.

#HereAtHotelSogo , both guests and employee are assured of their safety and security with these features:

1.    Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) incorporated in staff uniform.

2.    Temperature check and disinfection mats at the entrance.

3.    Installation of protective acrylic glass panel and social distancing in front desk.

4.    Social distancing with markers and limit number of persons in elevators.

5.   Contactless features from elevators and doors to toilet fixtures. This is thru foot door opener and foot-controlled dispenser. UVC light treatment is also modified in elevator consoles,  door handles,  keycard cases, cash register and food preparation.

6.    UVC disinfection light array cart in cleaning and disinfection of rooms and bathrooms. Studies prove that UVC can kill microbes, germs, bacteria and viruses. UVC is used in disinfecting hospitals as UVC kills pathogens and microorganisms.

7.    Constant disinfection in all amenities is being implemented. Hand Sanitizers are available in common areas.

8.    Newly designed giveaways for the guests such as no contact keys and sanitizers. No-contact key serves as a tool in touching common objects like door handles, elevator buttons, and ATMs.

9.    Contact tracing thru the Hotel Sogo mobile app.

The good new is that it’s not only at the hotel sites that they implement these features. Even the corporate office of Hotel Sogo is ready with the new normal with these guidelines:
1.    Temperature checks upon entering the office.
2.    Hand sanitizers in common areas.
3.    Limit to number of people using the elevator.
4.    Provision of multivitamins to employees.
5.    Social distancing in workplace and in crowded areas like canteen.

To know more on how Hotel Sogo is preparing for this new normal, you may check out this video:

Indeed, there is no reason to be afraid of this new normal, as companies like Hotel Sogo is proving that we can adapt to the needs of the changing times.

Why Abu Dhabi should be on your travel #bucketlist too

Whenever we hear of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), we always think of Dubai. But little do we know that its neighbor Abu Dhabi, is also an awesome place that is worth exploring. Abu Dhabi is UAE’s capital city that is just one and a half to two hours away from Dubai.

In my previous post, I’ve written why Dubai should be your next #travelgoals. This time, I’m gonna share why Abu Dhabi shouldn’t be an afterthought or a second fiddle to the more popular Dubai -- because I’ve loved this city as much as Dubai! And here are just some of the reasons why:

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Visiting the Louvre Museum in Paris is a dream of mine, but I don’t have the moolah yet to go to France. Good thing that there is now a Louvre Museum in Asia!

Louvre Abu Dhabi is the biggest museum in the Arab world with approximately 8,000 sqm of gallery space. It is located on Saadiyat Island, which is about a 30-minute public bus ride from the downtown. It opened November 2017.

It is said that Louvre is the first of its kind in the Arabian Peninsula, because it is not just your usual museum, but a universal museum at that. It’s an East-meets-West with diverse art from various cultures. It’s an ancient-meets-modern with historical artifacts from ancient civilizations to empires that ruled the world, and the modern art like the Fountain of Light. The museum’s dome ceiling itself is a modern-day work of art—a latticework that allows sunlight to pass through.

And definitely a dream come true for me as I was able to get up close with the works of Leonardo da Vinci (La belle ferronnière, also known as Portrait of an Unknown Woman) and Jacques-Louis David (Napoleon Crossing the Alps). They also have pieces by Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso and many more. The experience of seeing these great works of art in my own eyes and not just reading about them was just wow!

Allot half-a-day or a whole day for this so you can visit all the areas of the museum, and study each work of art (also, to maximize that the hefty admission ticket!). For more details, visit: https://www.louvreabudhabi.ae/

Warner Bros. World

Are you fond of theme parks? Do you love Scooby Doo, Bugs Bunny or Superman? Well, your favorite Warner Bros. characters come to life in this latest attraction in Yas Island. Recently opened in July 2018, this 22-acres attraction is one of the largest indoor theme parks in the world.

Having visited Universal Studios Singapore back in 2016, this place reminded me of just that—with your fave movie characters and setting, plus, rides. The difference is, of course, this is from a different movie studio. Also, Warner Bros. World is enclosed and fully air-conditioned (maybe because it is located in the middle of the hot Abu Dhabi desert?).

Enter the park and be immediately enthralled by the art deco-themed plaza with a sensory multimedia experience and color-changing skies.

You can now proceed to Metropolis where the Justice League is, or the dark pathways of Gotham City. Have fun with your fave character at the Cartoon Junction, the desert landscape of Dynamite Gulch, and the stone-age caves of Bedrock.

                                                                  Justice League Hall

Joker Funhouse
Dynamite Gulch

Each themed land has an immersive environment and exciting rides. You can even see your favorite character walking down the street!

                                                                    Riddler Revolution

                                                                     Ani Mayhem Ride

                                                                 Museum of Mysteries

For me, it was like a trip down memory lane with cartoons and characters that I grew up with. Indeed, it was so much fun to be young-a-heart again!

Allot half-a-day or a whole day for this so you can try all the rides! visit For more details, visit:  https://www.wbworldabudhabi.com/

ferrari World

So, after the kiddie stuff at Warner Bros. World, why not go also to Ferrari World since it’s also located in Yas Island?

I didn’t go inside because I’m afraid of rides that has anything to do with speed and heights. But, why not take the opportunity to take some pics at the entrance, haha!

But, if you are not the faint of heart, then Ferrari World is for you. Here in this park is the world’s fastest roller coaster ride—The Formula Rossa—that can accelerate at 240km per hour at a height of 52m above ground—just wow!

It also has “helicopter” interactive ride taking you to a virtual tour over Venice and the story of Ferrari.

For the thrill seekers, you may check this out for more info: https://www.ferrariworldabudhabi.com/

sheikh zayed mosque

Of course, never leave Abu Dhabi without visiting one of the world’s most popular attractions--the majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

It is the third largest mosque in the world that can accommodate up to 40,000 worshippers. The main prayer hall is spread with the world’s largest carpet at 60,570 sq. ft. It has 82 domes, 1,000 columns and a reflective pool. The mosque complex covers an area more than 12 hectares.

This architectural icon of Abu Dhabi has intricate details with imported chandeliers, semi-precious stones inlays on white marble. The mosque is a tribute to the founder Sheikh of the United Arab Emirates—Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to go inside because it was already late when we arrived. But, the mosque is grander at night, with the white mosque reflecting the colors of the night. Just like the photo below, and I must agree the mosque was really gigantic and majestic!

These are just some of the reasons why Abu Dhabi should be on your #bucketlist too. So, the next time you visit UAE, don’t limit yourself to just visiting Dubai, go and discover this travel gem that is Abu Dhabi and let yourself be surprised :)

Achieve Korean Skin at O2 Skin Lab

We Filipinos love everything Korean—from KDramas to KPop, and of course, skincare!

Good thing that we don’t have to go to Seoul to experience authentic Korean skin care, because glassy, poreless skin is now within our reach—right in the heart of Bonifacio Global City.

Welcome to O2 Skin Lab, a clinic that offers an authentic Korean skincare through Korean-sourced technologies, products and expertise.

Recently, I was fortunate to try out their 10-step Signature Korean Facial.

It’s unlike any other facials I have tried as it doesn’t use steam to open up the pores. Instead, gel is slathered on the face, which is heated by a device. The extraction part also didn’t hurt that much and didn’t leave marks on my face (yahoo!).

And for only PhP 2,800, the facial comes with RF skin tightening; massage on face, décolleté, arms, legs using a heavy amount of Korean massage oil; pumpkin mask; vitamin C serum infusion using a machine; and a collagen mask. Imagine all of these?! Definitely, worth every penny!

The session took almost 2-hours—two hours of relaxation and pure bliss, and I couldn’t wait to be back! After that much-needed pampering, I was ready to “face the world”, or rather, go to my next activity, barefaced and all!

Happy and energized, and ready for a night out in BGC :)

They also have other services such as body contouring, lasers, etc., which I would love to try soon :)

For more info on how to achieve that K-skin, follow their official accounts:

Dubai: A city of superlatives

They say that Dubai is a city of superlatives – and rightly so. Largest? Tallest? Longest? Most expensive? Well, it’s all here in Dubai! From the big, to the bold and over-the-top experience, Dubai’s got it.

Dubai is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. It is also one of the world’s most progressive business and leisure hubs.

And don’t worry, even if Dubai is in an Arab country, it is a very much open city—with the largest immigrant population in the world.

Last January, I was able to visit this dazzling city. I must say that I instantly fell in love with Dubai’s mix of old-world tradition and modern glitz and glamour.

So, here goes my top picks for the must-go to attractions in Dubai and be dazzled by this hotspot just like me!

DESERT SAFARI
What would you do in a city that is in the middle of a desert? Of course, have some sand adventure! It‘s a sneak peak at Arabian traditional culture while having fun!

There are various travel agencies offering desert safari tour packages. They basically have the same inclusions. Just do your research online and pick out the best option for you.

I was expecting an ATV-ride ala-Paoay sand dunes, but it was actually dune bashing inside a 4x4 vehicle (they mostly use Land Cruisers or Range Rovers). I guess this is better for me because it’s more comfortable and less frightening for me. There are still tensed moments, of course. But I mus say that drivers here are really experts in maneuvering over sand dunes.

There’s a sort of a stop where the riders can get out of their vehicles and take some photo ops of the lovely desert. Just a word of caution tho-it’s really hard to stand, much less walk over the fine sand! I’d also suggest that you take this tour when the sun is about to set, so you can capture that lovely color when the sun sets over the desert horizon.

I didn’t time the ride, but I surmised it was about 30 minutes. After that exhilarating ride, you can opt to have a camel back ride (which has a separate fee), or you can lounge around the desert camp. At the desert camp, there are various stalls selling snacks and souvenirs or offering various activities like shisha-smoking and picture-taking.

Everyone will then have an Arabian dinner whilst sitting on a pillow, under the stars. How charming, right? And this is while watching performances like belly dancing, fire dancers, and the likes.

It was a truly memorable experience of having that sand adventure and a chill dinner with entertainment. Definitely, an authentic Arabian experience that you shouldn’t miss!

DUBAI MIRACLE GARDEN
Didn’t I say that Dubai is a city of superlatives?

Well, one of them is the Dubai Miracle Garden, the world’s largest flower garden, featuring about 150 million flowers (whoah!). These are not just beautiful flower arrangements, mind you, as the flower displays are such a spectacle and so extravagant.

Upon entering the Miracle Garden, you’ll immediately feel like you’re in Disneyland—with your favorite Disney characters like Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto, etc greeting you as massive floral structures. The 55-ft tall Mickey Mouse holds the Guinness World Record for tallest topiary supported structure.

Set aside 2- 3 hours for you to be able go through the various sections of the 72,000 sqm park. There’s a clock display, gigantic floral felines, a floral castle, a ship adorned with flowers, and an Emirates Airbus A380 that holds a Guinness title for Largest Floral Installation.

I can go on and on but there’s just so much to see! After those hours of walking, you can have that much needed rest and meal in a really nice area—it’s right under colorful umbrellas!

The Garden itself is a miracle--imagine having all these flowers in the middle of a desert! So, definitely this park is not open the whole year-round. Better check out their website: https://www.dubaimiraclegarden.com/ for schedules and ticket prices.

QUEEN ELIZABETH 2
The world-famous cruise liner Queen Elizabeth 2 permanently docked in one of the world’s most eclectic cities sounds just about right? Right?

This floating hotel on the docks of Port Rashid Marina, is one of Dubai’s latest attractions, having just opened last April 2018. We included this in our itinerary, as an overnight stay in a historic and legendary ship sounds like a relaxing and unique experience!

Upon checking in, you can ask for the free guided tour schedule. I would say that this is a must for you to be able to appreciate the ship’s storied journey. Plus, you wouldn’t want to get lost in a ship that has so many decks and about 960 ft long!

Built in 1967, they tried to restore the ship back to its old glory. The cabins and suites were renovated but they kept the original porthole. Of course, modern amenities were added, like TV, phone and wifi. Across the ship, they kept period furniture and paintings.

how the rooms looked like back in the days

Some of the original restaurants were revived like The Chart Room (bar with the old world-maps still in there), Gin Bar, Golden Lion (traditional British pub), Yacht Club (my favorite is the al fresco terrace because it was a good place to just chill and—and meet strangers, but oh, that’s another story, haha), Queen’s Grill (featuring their 1969 menu prepared by QE2’s former chef! I’ve also heard that this restaurant was also frequented before by the royal family), and Lido (where we had our breakfast buffet of hearty continental dishes).

There’s also a spa, a sort of convenience store, duty-free shops, a pavilion for events, and a cinema. The terminal has a mini–museum and a library-slash-café featuring items from the 1960s.

At the time of our visit, the floating hotels isn’t really complete yet, as other features will be rolled out in phases (duh, no functioning swimming pool yet!) But, what can I say? It’s the next best thing to an actual cruise—looking at the horizon feeling the sea breeze on your skin—without leaving the port. It doesn’t hurt that this ship is an iconic one at that.

(For inquiries, visit their website: https://www.qe2.com/ )

LA MER DUBAI
Wind in your hair? Sand in your toes? Then Dubai’s got Jumeirah beach for you! For that ultimate Dubai beach experience, we headed on to La Mer, one of Dubai’s latest attractions.

We strolled along the walking paths and took in the view of the beautiful beachfront, the refreshing landscaping with artificial ponds, and the cool outdoor showers, among others.

You can rent umbrella and sun lounges, or just bring our own towel and chill under the sun. You can also try the various watersports (with a fee, of course) like paddling, boarding, etc.

This modern, sprawling development also has a waterpark, mini-playground and an outdoor trampoline park.

I also loved that this fun hotspot also has cool street art and murals. It also houses the trendy shops and boutiques like Sephora. The colorful buildings are differently styled, giving a hip vibe.

And after hours of beach bumming, strolling or shopping, you can dine at classy restaurants and cafes. There’s Italian, Greek, Turkish and so much more! It’s quite difficult to look for an affordable place to eat, so we ended up at Five Guys (which isn’t bad because hey, this is America’s favorite burger brand!).

This one’s a truly #mustvisit where the serenity of the beach contrasts, but matches (paradoxical, right?) the sophisticated and chic development.

BURJ KHALIFA
Of course, don’t leave the city of superlatives without visiting the tallest building in the world—the Burj Khalifa.

At a staggering 828 meters with 200 stories, the Burj Khalifa is probably the most iconic structure in Dubai.

The skyscraper is very accessible, as it is just located in downtown Dubai, right beside Dubai Mall (which incidentally, is the second largest mall in the world by total land area). The ticket office is actually inside the mall, but you can also buy tickets online (Check out their website: https://tickets.atthetop.ae/atthetop/en-us). We bought tickets for the At the Top observation deck.

We walked towards the elevator at the base of the tower. Along the way, there are interactive displays giving information about the building.

I was quite nervous upon entering the elevator. Imagine, having to ride up to 124 floors! But amazingly, the ride took just a few minutes and I really didn’t feel anything. Perhaps, because I was intently watching at the digital projections inside the elevator.

the view from the deck
When we got off at the observation deck, there were already plenty of tourists, so it’s kinda difficult to have an unobstructed photo-op. Levels 124 and 125 are basically just the same, just different “mini-attractions” on each floor. There are viewing telescopes, various “instagrammable sections” and a souvenir shop.

Taking in the spectacular views from the deck and just having those photo-ops may take you about an hour. On the way out, you’ll pass a different area that also has displays about Burj Khalifa’s history.

Indeed, Dubai is a city that seeks to impress and it does so with so much success! And these are just some of the reasons why this city of superlatives should be your next #travelgoals
